Nectar vs Clubcard: which loyalty card gives you more?

The verdict

For value, Clubcard. A Clubcard point is worth 1p, twice as much as a Nectar point’s 0.5p, and both collect 1 point per £1 at their own supermarket. So £100 at Tesco earns 100 points (£1), against 100 points (50p) at Sainsbury’s. Vouchers exchanged with a Reward Partner are worth up to 2x, so a point can be worth up to 2p.

For reach, Nectar. Nectar collects 1 point per £1 at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu, so one card covers your groceries, Argos and more. Clubcard’s usual rate is for Tesco, F&F, Tesco Café, Tesco Pharmacy and Tesco Mobile.

Points last longer on Clubcard. Clubcard points are lost when an account goes 2 years unused, Nectar points after 12 months. Using a card at least once a year keeps both.

So carry both. They are separate schemes, and each earns only at its own shops and partners, so which card to use is decided by where you shop. Use Nectar at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu, and Clubcard at Tesco.

Where each card collects

Fuel, and which card to use at Esso

At their own supermarkets’ petrol stations they pay the same: 1 point per 2 litres at Tesco petrol stations and 1 point per litre at Sainsbury’s petrol stations are both 0.5p back a litre, or up to 1p a litre on Clubcard through Reward Partners. At Esso, the site decides: Esso sites with a Tesco Express pay Clubcard points (1 point per £3), and other participating Esso sites pay Nectar points (1 point per litre, and 2 points per £1 in the shop).

Esso is the one place where the two schemes meet. Esso’s own page says Nectar points are collected at participating Esso sites across Great Britain, except those with a Tesco Express shop attached, so check the shop before you pay.

The biggest always-on rewards

Both schemes have partners that pay a fixed number of points for a big purchase or a switch, worth far more than 1 point per £1, with no end date. Compare the deal itself first: points are a bonus, not a reason to pay more.

Nectar vs Clubcard FAQ

Is Nectar or Clubcard better?

Clubcard gives more back: at the same 1 point per £1, its points are worth 1p, twice as much as Nectar’s 0.5p, and up to 2p through Reward Partners. Nectar collects in more big shops: Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu. Clubcard points also last longer: 2 years unused, against 12 months. Each card earns only at its own shops and partners, so carry both and use the one for where you shop.

Are Clubcard points worth more than Nectar points?

Yes, twice as much: a Clubcard point is worth 1p in vouchers and a Nectar point 0.5p. So 1,000 Clubcard points are £10, or up to £20 through a Reward Partner, and 1,000 Nectar points are £5.

Is Nectar or Clubcard better for fuel?

At their own supermarkets’ petrol stations they pay the same: 1 point per 2 litres at Tesco petrol stations and 1 point per litre at Sainsbury’s petrol stations are both 0.5p back a litre, or up to 1p a litre on Clubcard through Reward Partners. At Esso, the site decides: Esso sites with a Tesco Express pay Clubcard points (1 point per £3), and other participating Esso sites pay Nectar points (1 point per litre, and 2 points per £1 in the shop).

Can you have a Nectar card and a Clubcard?

Yes. They are separate schemes, and each earns only at its own shops and partners, so use Nectar at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu, and Clubcard at Tesco. At Esso, use whichever the site takes.

Every rate, value and rule was read on the scheme’s own website or in its terms (both on 6 Oct 2026), and the Esso and Sainsbury’s fuel rules on 8 Oct 2026 (Esso: loyalty schemes, Nectar: Sainsbury’s). Every UK scheme we cover is compared in our loyalty points value index and points expiry rules.
